Body

MRQ Thursday Island is part of a small, but dedicated group of units which support boaties in the Torres Strait region.

Together with our partner units in the Torres Strait, our area of operation extends for a range of approximately 250 nautical miles. This covers the northernmost point of the Commonwealth of Australia at Boigau Island, to the islands around Masig Island in the northeast, to Mission River in the west, and to Shelburne in the southeast.

Our unit does not maintain a radio watch, but Thursday Island Port Control monitors channel 16. You can also contact MRQ Thursday Is on 0417 836 518 or call Queensland Police on (07) 4069 1520 for assistance.

Please note that launch time is approximately 1 hour from Thursday Island.

MRQ Thursday Island operates in conjunction with other local MRQ units to provide support to the boating community. If you require support when travelling in the region outside our area, contact MRQ Masig, MRQ Kubin, MRQ St Pauls or QF25 Cape York

Volunteering with MRQ is a great way to give back to the local community, learn some new skills and enjoy the camaraderie and friendship of a crew of dedicated volunteers. Some people even use volunteering as an opportunity to start a career in the marine industry.

We provide training, uniforms, support and assistance, so no matter your experience or skill level, you’ll find a role that helps to contribute to our operation.

Apply to become a volunteer with MRQ Thursday Island or find out more about volunteering opportunities.

Remember to always follow the marine safety rules and continue to Log On and Log Off via your local unit or VHF radio
