MRQ Mornington Island has a small but dedicated group of volunteers who provide marine rescue support to anyone who runs into trouble on the water.
Mornington Island is the largest island in the Wellesley Islands group which sits at the southern end of the Gulf of Carpentaria. We operate out of Gununa in the south-western part of the island.
Our unit works closely with other emergency services in the region, including the Qld Police, Queensland Ambulance and the Mornington Shire Council Local Disaster Management group. If you require urgent assistance, contact the Mornington Island police on 4747 9090. Messages for assistance can also be relayed via Sweers Island Resort on VHF Channel 16.
MRQ Mornington Island has a launch time of approximately ½ an hour from Gununa.
We operate in conjunction with local marine rescue units to provide support to the boating community. If you require support when travelling outside our area, contact VMR Burketown, VMR Karumba or VMR Weipa.
Remember to always follow the marine safety rules and continue to Log on and Log off by calling MRQ Mornington Island on 0417 037 788.
