MRQ Gladstone

Body

For more than 50 years, MRQ Gladstone has been providing safety of life at sea for boaties in the region. Our squadron was originally formed in 1971 as the Port Curtis Air Sea Rescue Association and joined the Volunteer Marine Rescue Association Queensland Inc. in 1983. On 1 July 2024, MRQ Gladstone was the first of two inaugural squadrons to transition into Marine Rescue Queensland.

Operational area

Our operational area runs from Cape Capricorn in the north to Bustard Head in the south, and up to 50 nautical miles seaward to the reef islands.

The squadron is crewed every day of the year from 6.30am to 6pm (although these hours may vary from time to time). We work in cooperation with Gladstone BTS to maintain a 24-hour watch on VHF channels 16 and 82.

Volunteer with MRQ Gladstone

Join our dedicated crew and volunteer with MRQ Gladstone. Volunteering for just a few hours can make a big difference to our ability to provide our services to the on-water public and it’s a great way to meet new people, learn new skills and give back to your local community. There are lots of ways you can get involved – from working behind the scenes to out on the water – and we provide uniforms, training and support along the way. Apply to become a volunteer with MRQ Gladstone or find out more about volunteering opportunities.

Our community

We provide support for search and rescue activities, breakdowns, groundings, and medical evacuations. We also support local community events like the Brisbane to Gladstone yacht race, Boyne Tannum Hookup, Port Curtis Sailing Club races, and Awoonga Dam events. Regular courses such as navigation and radio licences are run at the base.

MRQ Gladstone operates in conjunction with local VMR and AVCGA units to provide support to the boating community. If you require support when travelling in the region outside our area, contact VMR Round HillQF20 Keppel Sands or QF11 Yeppoon.

Support our activities

We are a Queensland Government supported service, but your donations allow us to enhance our services and support to the local community. Make a donation to MRQ and include instructions for your donation to be applied to MRQ Gladstone.
