Excitement was high at Burnett Heads as MRQ Bundaberg volunteers delivered another hugely successful MRQ Bundaberg Family Fishing Classic, with great weather, strong community support and three major boat raffles helping make this year’s event one to remember.
Held from 3 to 5 July, the classic marked its 19th year and once again drew families, keen fishers and supporters together for a packed weekend of competition, community spirit and celebration.
Event coordinator Graham White from MRQ Bundaberg said the fishing competition itself delivered plenty of highlights, with more than 1,000 entries recorded across junior and senior categories and more than 100 fish entered at the weigh-in.
"Among the standout moments was a sizeable Coral Trout that may have been a winning catch, if not for a shark taking a bite before it reached the shore."
Chief Officer Tony Wulff attended the event, where he welcomed the community on opening night, thanked volunteers for the enormous effort behind the classic, and took part in some of the prize draws.
Aside from the fishing action, the weekend offered plenty of community atmosphere, with visitors enjoying the chance to tour Bundy Rescue 3, a vessel purchased with the help of community funding from previous classics. It stands as a strong example of how support from both local individuals and businesses continues to strengthen marine rescue capability in Bundaberg.
The event also highlighted the generosity and commitment of local sponsors and businesses, whose ongoing backing plays a vital role in the success of the classic each year. Their contribution helps make the event possible and reflects their appreciation in MRQ Bundaberg's invaluable contribution to keeping their community safe on the water.
Regional Coordinator John Wood, praised the volunteers behind the scenes.
“You could see just how much work had gone into this year’s Bundaberg Family Fishing Classic. The local members did an outstanding job. Their professionalism, commitment and 19 years of experience really showed.”
Congratulations MRQ Bundaberg on another successful Bundaberg Family Fishing Classic.
